A study published on June 4, 2024, in PLOS Mental Health, conducted by University College London and King’s College London, confirms that e-cigarettes are the most effective tool for quitting smoking.
Coming in second place were varenicline and heated tobacco products.
The study focused on the effectiveness of smoking cessation aids in individuals diagnosed with mental health conditions (classified under ICD-10) as well as those without such diagnoses. Over 5,000 regular smokers, who attempted to quit within the past year, were surveyed. About 45% of participants reported having diagnosed mental health issues, aligning with previous research showing a higher prevalence of addiction in this group. People with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia are more prone to nicotine addiction and tend to smoke more frequently than the general population.
