There is increasing evidence that aerosol from e-cigarettes is significantly less harmful to health than tobacco smoke. The lack of clear and accurate reporting from experimental studies has led to numerous misconceptions about the risks of e-cigarettes.
According to Riccardo Polosa, director of CoEHAR (Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction at the University of Catania), growing evidence shows that replacing traditional cigarettes with e-cigarettes is an effective way to reduce smoking. However, Polosa acknowledges that information provided to consumers about e-cigarettes is inconsistent, leading to only a small percentage of adult smokers viewing them as less harmful. These misconceptions have real consequences and need to be corrected.
“There is an urgent need to develop solid and realistic methodological recommendations to properly assess the health impact of e-cigarette use under normal conditions. Adopting standardized methods could allow for more reliable scientific research in tobacco harm reduction.”
