Tobacco smoking contributes to numerous oral diseases, leading to plaque buildup and gum inflammation, which can result in serious health issues. In response to the need for research on the impact of safer nicotine products, CoEHAR conducted the SMILE study, focusing on e-cigarettes (ENDS) and heated tobacco products (HTP).
The SMILE Study
Launched on February 26, 2024, the study aimed to determine whether switching from smoking to safer nicotine alternatives improves oral health. Experts from Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Moldova, and Indonesia conducted research in dental clinics.
The study involved 136 participants, divided into four groups: smokers, former smokers, never-smokers, and users of e-cigarettes and HTP. Results showed that ENDS and HTP users had significantly less plaque buildup than current smokers, with plaque levels similar to those of never-smokers and former smokers.
Conclusions
The SMILE study provides valuable insights into the impact of safer nicotine products on oral health. The results suggest that e-cigarettes and HTP may be less harmful to oral health than traditional cigarettes. Moreover, aesthetic benefits such as fresher breath and whiter teeth offer additional motivation to quit smoking or encourage smokers to transition to safer alternatives.
